Who Am I?
Hi, I’m Jason. I’m a motor vehicle technician based in the UK, specializing in diagnosing and repairing both traditional and electric vehicles. I work for a major dealership and have been in the industry for over 26 years.
Throughout my career, I’ve had to learn new skills to keep up with advancing technology. This has led me to explore electronics, basic coding (C, Python, PHP, Asm), and simple web design using WordPress and CakePHP, as well as experimenting with Microchip 16F/18F and Arduino projects. Understanding these areas has helped me diagnose complex vehicle issues and develop solutions beyond just mechanical repairs.
Recently, I built a WordPress site for a community I’m involved with and started developing a back-end management system for them. This project sparked my curiosity about cybersecurity—not just for securing the website I’m building, but also in relation to the cars I work on.
Why Cybersecurity?
Modern vehicles are no longer just machines; they are connected devices. With remote access, over-the-air updates, and cloud-based features becoming the norm, cybersecurity in the automotive world is more critical than ever. If I’m working with cars that are essentially computers on wheels, shouldn’t I understand how they interact with the internet and how to keep them secure?
At the same time, I want to ensure that the websites and applications I create are protected from vulnerabilities. That’s why I’ve decided to dive into cybersecurity—to secure what I build and understand the security risks of modern vehicles.
Can Someone with No Cybersecurity Background Learn and Earn Certifications?
That’s the question I’m setting out to answer. I have no formal training in cybersecurity, but I’m eager to learn. Through this blog, I’ll document my journey—everything from the basics of cybersecurity to working toward industry-recognized certifications.
If you’re also curious about cybersecurity but don’t know where to start, join me on this journey. Let’s see what happens!
