Practice Exam Day — Security+ Trial Run

Today I decided to see where I really stand and jumped onto the CompTIA Security+ training portal for the full practice exam.
That’s 87 questions, 90 minutes on the clock, and a mix of straight multiple choice plus 3 scenario-based curveballs designed to test if you can actually apply your knowledge in the wild.

Final score? 86% — a solid pass on my first timed run!
It wasn’t just a memory test — it felt like the real deal, and it made me even more confident that I’m ready to book the actual exam. Worst case, I come back sharper. Best case… well, there will be celebratory snacks.

🔢 The five Security+ domains (SY0-701)

1) General Security Concepts – Strong footing here. CIA triad, control types, and change management were all smooth sailing.

2) Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations – Mostly solid, but phishing scenarios still make me pause. Quick reaction drills will help.

3) Security Architecture – Good overall, but my review list just grew here (see below).

4) Security Operations – IAM basics were fine, but advanced implementation questions? Those are going on the “study harder” list.

5) Security Program Management and Oversight – Frameworks and compliance are good, but I’ll be doing some final polishing on the governance terms.

📌 My main review priorities before the real thing:

  • Implement Identity and Access Management – Nailing the how of IAM, not just the what.
  • Secure Enterprise Network Architecture – From segmentation to defense-in-depth, get every layer right.
  • Secure Cloud Network Architecture – Locking down cloud designs and hybrid setups like a pro.
  • Summarize Data Protection and Compliance Concepts – Clear, quick recall of key regulations and principles.

🎯 Next steps

  • Focus review on those four priority areas.
  • Keep scenario practice sharp to speed up real-world application thinking.
  • Book the exam. No more “one day” — it’s happening.
